Breaking Ground, Changing Lives: Meet Dr. Christopher Bowie, the 2013 HMC/Sun Life Financial/Pfizer Canada Psychiatry Research Awards Program Winner
Healthy Minds Canada was honoured to be a partner, along with Sun Life Financial and Pfizer Canada in presenting the $100,000 HMC/Sun Life Financial/Pfizer Canada 2013 Research Award to Dr. Christopher Bowie.
With this award, Dr. Bowie will be furthering his research on Action-Based Cognitive Remediation, which translates to helping people with mental illness get back to work, be more productive, and feel better on the job.
Since receiving the award, Dr. Bowie has published the preliminary results of his research in Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal. This paper showed that the form of treatment his team developed, called Action-Based Cognitive Remediation (ABCR), was superior to a traditional form of Cognitive Remediation in improving everyday living skills and helping people return to work.
The anticipated completion date for the study is spring 2017 with several publications related to the project underway. In addition, Dr. Bowie’s award has allowed him to form new international collaborations to disseminate ABCR throughout Canada as well as in Ireland, the U.S. and Denmark and with diverse populations including first episode psychosis and bipolar disorder. Aspects of ABCR were recently featured in Cognitive Remediation to Improve Functional Outcomes, which Dr. Bowie co-edited with Dr. Alice Medalia for Oxford University Press.
His Award is one of three under the 2013 Pfizer Psychiatry Research Awards Program. The other winners are Dr. Vina Goghari, and Dr. Didier Jutras-Aswad. Check out their outstanding research (click to enlarge):
