Bouncing back from a mental collapse is possible; I am living proof that it is possible. I don’t mean to blow my own horn, I just want you to know that it can be done. I never would have imagined myself writing a blog for Healthy Minds Canada; especially in the depths of the valley so to speak; but I think that it is important to realize that your current predicament is not permanent and is only temporary. Yes, some mental health conditions are chronic but our response to this reality is within our control and we can ultimately choose to be happy. It is this realization that we are not simply controlled or swept up by our circumstances and that if we choose to have an ‘internal locus of control’ we can start to see a shift or breakthrough in our recovery. Our inner resources are just as valuable if not more so then the ‘hand we are dealt’ by our circumstances. Mental health experts are still trying to uncover the relationship between our genetic predisposition for mental illness and our environment. Are you of the mindset that none of it is in your control or do you believe that there exists an element of willpower and perseverance associated with recovery? I think it is healthy to acknowledge that mental health can be influenced by factors outside of our control. But I think it is also important to acknowledge that there are factors within our control and I think the current literature seems to stray from this. Let’s start worrying about what’s in our control.
